Platycerium Bifurcatum
 
Habit
Epiphytic fern with two distinct types of fronds. Rounded shield fronds grow around the base, while the longer fertile fronds grow outward and develop the characteristic antler-like shape.
 
Growth Rate
Moderate under warm, bright conditions.
 
Placement
Can be grown in a pot, hanging basket or mounted onto wood. Mature plants look particularly good mounted or displayed where the fronds have room to grow outward.
 
Leaf Size
Varies between species and maturity. Established plants can produce large fronds extending well beyond the base of the plant.
 
Light
Bright indirect light is ideal. Gentle morning or late-afternoon sun can be beneficial once the plant is acclimated.
 
Water
Water thoroughly, then allow the growing medium to dry considerably before watering again. Mounted plants will usually need watering more frequently than potted plants.
 
Soil

Feeding

Humidity
Average household humidity is generally sufficient, although higher humidity can encourage stronger growth.
 
Sensitivities
Sensitive to overwatering and poor airflow around the roots. Avoid removing healthy brown shield fronds, as these form a natural protective layer around the base of the plant.

Yes. Platycerium are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.
